2023 UBC Apartheid Investment Database

In 2023, UBC invested an estimated $113,852,076 in Israeli apartheid, settler-colonialism and genocide. The percent invested in the military-industrial complex increased by 0.23% from 2022. Additionally, UBC did not disclose its 2023 holdings until it faced pressure from students at the Okanagan and Vancouver campuses. Transparency would not have happened otherwise.

Where did we get the data

The UBC Social Justice Centre and UBC Graduate Students for Palestine cross- referenced the 2023 UBC IMANT Holdings Disclosure Report with data from the UN OHCHR, the AFSC, WhoProfits, the BDS Movement, CorpWatch, and Al-Haq to identify 88 companies complicit in Israeli crimes against humanity that UBC invests in. This data is presented in the images that will follow.

UBC IMANT’s reports list the endowment holdings in percentages. The dollar amounts listed in this post are estimates, resulting from calculations based on comparing the overall value of the endowment with the percentage listed. However, the dates of the holding disclosure report do not fully match up with the reporting dates for the endowment fund value. The value of the endowment fund was reported to be $2.19 billion on March 31st, 2023 while the holding disclosure was reported on June 30, 2023. For comparison, the March 31st, 2023 value of the fund was $2.09 billion. The dollar amount should be a good estimate assuming the fund’s value grew somewhat evenly over the three months from March to June 2023.
